2 International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) ISIC is a United Nations system for classifying economic data. The United Nations Statistics Division describes it in the following terms: - Wide use has been made of ISIC, both nationally and internationally, in classifying data according to kind of economic activity in the fields of production, employment, gross domestic product and other statistical areas. - ISIC is a basic tool for studying economic phenomena, fostering international comparability of data, providing guidance for the development of national classifications and for promoting the development of sound national statistical systems. 2

4 International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) The fourth revision of ISIC In the years since the publication of the third revision of ISIC, the economic structure in many countries of the world has changed at an unprecedented rate. The emergence of new technologies and new divisions of labour between organizations has created new types of activities and new forms of industries, posing a challenge for both providers and users of statistical data. In response to their growing demands, the Expert Group on International Economic and Social Classifications, at its fourth meeting in1999, considered the need for a revision of ISIC to better reflect changed structures and analytical requirements. 4
